From Relationship Breakup to Coffee Cup: Evolution of a Doodle

What began over thirty years ago as a short-lived obsession with doodling after a relationship breakup, a few years later became large plywood sculptures, then recently, Giclée graphic prints, and thanks to print-on-demand technology, items like coffee cups and tee-shirts. It’s been an artistic evolution over a long period of time, ultimately turning into something I never would have imagined at the beginning.

I made 14 of those doodles into large plywood sculptures and then used photographs of the sculptures as graphic elements in a series of prints (samples shown here).

Moving from something personal (I’M OK doodle) that I did not consider to be art into something I considered to be art (I’M OK sculpture and print), then to something commercial but not art (a coffee cup) is a strange experience for someone who likes art.

Graphic design is very different from what I have done since I was a teenager: photography, mostly black and white.

I belong to the “pretty picture” movement of art (not Lightroom): create something that I think is nice to look at over time.
